It had been over 10 years since I’d first started looking for a cause, longer since I’d easily slept. Facebook posts attest to poor sleeping.</p><p>Migraines worsened every year. I went from a couple of headaches a year to a couple a week.</p><p>Sleep habits weren’t changing even with my dietary changes. </p><p>To make it worse, I had a Samsung smart watch that tracked my sleep quality. </p><p>Lovely. Now I knew how bad it was.</p><p>DRUMWELL, please.</p><p>Enter Dr. Lindsey with NAET.</p><p>It took weeks and quite a few treatments of various things, but my sleep quality started improving. Unless I ate something I was still allergic to, of course.</p><p>Now I know headache is a sign of allergy.</p><p>Or of a clearing that didn’t take.</p><p>I hate those.</p><p>NAET not only clears physical allergies but emotional origins as well so they can really wipe a girl out!!!</p><p>Most of emotional stuff that came up as needing clearings immediately brought stories up. Connections, sometimes to ancestors and sometimes my own experiences.</p><p>This week’s challenge is mine, I believe, and it’s a doozy! We’re slowly working through Grains, and every single one of them is taking multiple clearings! Corn took three, wheat took another two. Rice is fine—hooray! Now, though, I’m clearing oats. Oats and gluten. Corn and wheat also had to be cleared with gluten. The one thing NOBODY with Hashimoto’s is EVER supposed to reintroduce into their diet. </p><p>So, oats and gluten.</p><p>I know that story!</p><p>My mother always made hot cereal for us in the morning, and we ate together as a family. My sister had to leave at 7:10 a.m. so I had to get up to eat. Two things. I hated getting up early, and I detested hot cereal. My sister came home from an early morning religion class at our church and had 5-10 minutes to gulp down breakfast and race out the door! </p><p>After breakfast, I had a leisurely couple of hours before I had to leave to walk to the bus stop about a half mile away. Just had to throw that in! :)</p><p>Breakfast went slowly for me as well. Did I mention I hated hot cereal? We had several different ones, all different grains. And oatmeal? Um, yes, and it was the worst! It was slimy, and I was so revolted by it that my throat would reject it and try to push it back. It was even worse cold. Then it was all around disgusting! Eventually my mother gave me smaller and smaller portions until only a couple of spoonfuls made it into my bowl, which got cold even faster!</p><p>🐶 to the rescue!</p><p>Our dog would always sit in the doorway to the dining room hopefully, and it didn’t take long for me to understand she would eat ANYTHING. Including oatmeal. Cold. She would also be neat about it and take it off the spoon with no spills.</p><p>That was important because my mother would clear the table after everyone except me left and start washing dishes, but the sink was in sight of my place at the table. So I couldn’t risk being seen solid surreptitiously give him one spoonful at a time.</p><p>Our bodies connect the dots well although sometimes erroneously. It interpreted my revulsion to grain cereals as something to avoid at all costs and most likely developed allergies to it so it wouldn’t be harmed. Here my mother was trying to give me something nutritious, and it completely failed.</p><p><br /></p>somecookIsewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08579822534539544094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8660136811094465856.post-28991743579697514092022-09-05T08:00:00.012-04:002023-06-06T10:42:49.639-04:00DNA?<p> So I have learned that there is often a marker in our genes for Hashimoto’s.</p><p>Where was mine?</p><p>Because I’ve been living with my parents for the past two years, I’ve learned a few things from my sister that I never knew before.</p><p>Like my dad commenting to her once when he saw her sprouting wheat that his mother used to sprout wheat and she tried many other different, holistic ways to improve her health through nutrition. His mother went blind after his birth because of hypertension. Her nurse sister-in-law came to visit once and saw how sick she was and told my grandfather to rush her to the hospital. She had to have the baby (my dad) that day!</p><p>My dad was born at 7 months. In 1931. He’s a survivor because the technology did not exist to save him at such an early gestational age! But Grandma went blind for three years due to cataracts. They finally were blue to correct them enough for her to see through coke bottle thick glasses, and she was grateful although embarrassed because they distorted her face my magnifying her eyes.</p><p>Grandma died at age 56 because of cirrhosis of the liver. She was being treated for sugar diabetes, and she had never drunk a drop of liquor in her life. Now we know there are other reasons besides alcoholism causing that disease, but then they hushed up the cause because they knew liquor could not have caused it.</p><p>Another cause is Hashimoto’s Disease.</p><p>They had not discovered that Hashimoto’s existed back in the 1950s.</p><p>My diagnosis came at age 58.</p><p>Was I living on borrowed time? </p><p><br /></p>somecookIsewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08579822534539544094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8660136811094465856.post-15656180756041663732022-09-03T08:00:00.022-04:002023-06-06T10:42:15.434-04:00Hashimoto’s!? Oh my!<p> Between April 2021 and today, I was diagnosed with several autoimmune disorders including Hashimoto’s Disease, high-ish blood sugar levels (under pressure-diabetes but probably always at the higher level so a risk of diabetes), high cholesterol, low blood pressure, and osteoporosis and osteopenia. The Hashimoto’s can explain all of the above. My family nurse practitioner prescribed a low carb, no grains, nuts, seeds, sugar, dairy, nightshades, and high levels of organic beef and meat diet. I think I caught all of that! </p><p>After some research, I started the AIP protocol, or Autoimmune Paleo diet, a couple of weeks before Christmas. Yup, I skipped the sugared goodies (mostly). I’ve actually loved it although it’s expensive. The organic part of the meat stopped because my budget bloomed with the increase in meats. You do the best you can and pray that it will be enough. Oh, and tons of supplements, adding in methylated B12 and folate, B6, B2, biotin, lysosomal vitamin C, zinc, Benfotiamine with Thiamine, D3, calcium, strontium among others. Oh, yes, I also started taking all the hormonal replacements including NP Thyroid, and bio-identical estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.</p><p>A few months later, and this was a game changer, my niece started going to an acupuncturist who also practiced NAET and Chinese herbal medicine. She saw him for NAET, which stands for Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique. Its basis is that many illnesses actually stem from allergies. NAET uses knowledge from many fields such as Western medicine (mostly for why it works), acupuncture, chiropractic in creating something that actually desensitizes patients to those substances that are causing allergies. When you have an allergy to a substance, your body blocks it.</p><p>So basically you don’t get the nutrients you need from either supplements or food.</p><p>Boo, hiss.</p><p>The NAET practitioner muscle tests you for each thing individually and then clears you for the item that comes up as a problem. One. At. A. Time. For something like Hashimoto’s, it will take awhile! It isn’t covered by insurance yet, but I think it will save me THOUSANDS of dollars over the long haul. </p><p>My only symptom for Hashimoto’s? Extreme fatigue with crippling insomnia. For a time, I even slept in a spare bedroom so I wouldn’t disturb my husband and so I could sleep WHENEVER I could!</p><p>You got it. I ran on cortisol for YEARS!</p><p>Ten years before, I finally went to the doctor to try to understand why I couldn’t sleep or shake the fatigue even when I could! </p><p>I remember they told me my thyroid numbers were normal for my age. I was around 49. Perhaps a little high but nothing to worry about.</p><p>They didn’t test for autoimmune conditions.</p><p>In 2019, another doctor in another state diagnosed the osteoporosis/osteopenia. And we found out I’m allergic to Fosamax. To the extreme. Lockjaw. Thankfully the two times I took it, I woke up at night in discomfort and realized I couldn’t open my mouth so I forced it open—talk about extreme willpower!—downed a couple of teaspoons of Natural Calm ionized magnesium immediately. I never took it again instead opting for a supplement called Algae Cal.</p><p>Fast forward two years later to January 2022 to the knowledgeable nurse practitioner in another state and another DEXA scan. No improvement.</p><p>Any surprise when I tested allergic to calcium in NAET?</p><p>Magnesium was fine, but not calcium!</p><p>Long stories usually go longer but I’ll shorten it now. </p><p>I’m still basically on AIP, at least when I want to avoid migraines and lousy sleep, but we’re slowly working through the allergies.</p><p>I’ve cleared calcium, B vitamins (yup, I was allergic to those too), my own thyroid gland and adrenals, serotonin (no wonder my sleep quality was so bad), calcium, to name a few biggies. </p><p>Now we’re working through grains and gluten. Hello to some really tough ones! I’ll talk about where I’m at next time.</p><p><br /></p>somecookIsewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08579822534539544094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8660136811094465856.post-50631164360942612112021-04-02T01:05:00.005-04:002021-04-02T01:05:53.336-04:00Day 22 What do you think?<p style="text-align: center;">So I've made it to Day 22. I just got a haircut, and it has been a hard day. I've had a hard time staying upbeat. Several upsets.</p><p style="text-align: center;">BUT</p><p style="text-align: center;">One funny story.</p><p style="text-align: center;">I went for a drive this evening, and ended up retracing the drive to my high school and returned home by way of the high road, which is no longer the highest road on the mountain. Coming home, I detoured to go past my grandpa’s house, except I couldn’t find it. I went past several more times and couldn’t spot the jungle that marked his house. (When we sold the house, the new owners re-landscaped it and put far, far too many trees, bushes, and other plants in, and then let it overgrow the entire yard.) </p><p style="text-align: center;">Finally, as I approached one last time, I spotted the west side of the house, a side that has been all but invisible for years! Excitement growing, I searched for less overgrowth and saw it! The front porch!!! I squealed with excitement! Last summer, I desperately wanted to see the house again so I walked up the driveway and up the walk until I reached the steps so I could actually see the front porch. The yard was THAT overgrown! This time I could see the whole house as I drove by! Id been missing it because the jungle was gone!</p><p style="text-align: center;">So to whomever owns it now, thank you so much! The house can breathe!</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;">Now to show you day 22 with a non-smiling face:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAB5FTgRPaS7mFREElcJ-zL0xR9cf0GWLt0H7427DoA_Kv5S1xODOKHJmszX9ST1CTCfTHFRmIn9ABN-xeJnkKxx1n40MflNJwt9_nlx0sEur78jrB44ZFa9HSlWR-2m6d7O7lKtMZSBoF/s1280/C8F7DFBD-6665-4439-BC8C-AF1F65B3E1E4.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="960" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAB5FTgRPaS7mFREElcJ-zL0xR9cf0GWLt0H7427DoA_Kv5S1xODOKHJmszX9ST1CTCfTHFRmIn9ABN-xeJnkKxx1n40MflNJwt9_nlx0sEur78jrB44ZFa9HSlWR-2m6d7O7lKtMZSBoF/w300-h400/C8F7DFBD-6665-4439-BC8C-AF1F65B3E1E4.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">With my preferred expression:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCFUBkRpiElbCz4KB6B4Rf0ZBiCnYsONosm0lKNoTMtR9p4bivV9J1d7FfDUk8cwgA8MFxEbYoUu4dBo63B7HqSfxPr2sv3t8ODUkblhWhB7ssVV97HucQYqPma2fetjanfbgGwk4EOEh3/s1280/0C5FCD38-33FB-452B-9C5B-CD75BD429669.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="960" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCFUBkRpiElbCz4KB6B4Rf0ZBiCnYsONosm0lKNoTMtR9p4bivV9J1d7FfDUk8cwgA8MFxEbYoUu4dBo63B7HqSfxPr2sv3t8ODUkblhWhB7ssVV97HucQYqPma2fetjanfbgGwk4EOEh3/w300-h400/0C5FCD38-33FB-452B-9C5B-CD75BD429669.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Day 0:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi11MNgQgTvD5etfjFOrA7EEAwEqaDEMwshhZ67grgydo1Uf3V-k3LSV8TkS5O7Hps5gJrVoDLwfQhEGVLQ7Nmy9HkHyzZD19glZq0rKjO0eeM8wDkgU2AtjrMXA-EoXxaaZG6EqdlXug7I/s2048/0AE107C4-8C10-4E2D-8579-1B8487D135CB.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi11MNgQgTvD5etfjFOrA7EEAwEqaDEMwshhZ67grgydo1Uf3V-k3LSV8TkS5O7Hps5gJrVoDLwfQhEGVLQ7Nmy9HkHyzZD19glZq0rKjO0eeM8wDkgU2AtjrMXA-EoXxaaZG6EqdlXug7I/w300-h400/0AE107C4-8C10-4E2D-8579-1B8487D135CB.png" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">What do you think? The blue sweatshirt in the first picture has great memories because I bought it in Boston, and I chose the one I liked the best, but it’s definitely a stay-at-home and be lazy shirt for me for now on!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">That said, I value bringing back more elasticity into my skin. When is the last time you experimented with something?</p><p> </p><h4 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #04ff00; font-size: medium;">Cooking?</span></h4><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><h4 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #04ff00;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Sewing</span>?</span></h4><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><h4 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #04ff00; font-size: medium;">Quilting?</span></h4><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><h4 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #04ff00; font-size: medium;">New project management technique?</span></h4><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Today I decided I was going to try an experiment with a collagen product that Isagenix offers. I have found I'm cautious about posting pictures of myself, and none without smiling, because I am very aware of smile lines. A few years ago a fellow at a mall kiosk put a product on my face that was supposed to last for 5 days. It worked, but I thought the cost was prohibitive. I decided to try a daily product from another source but my husband suggested I take a look at what Isagenix offered. I have learned more and more about Isagenix products as he has continued to use their products in his pursuit of weight loss and pain management.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So here's my experiment. I ordered the Beauty Afterglow Bundle. I'm going to take pictures every day although I won't bore you with daily pictures--maybe weekly. Let's see if it does lighten the lines on my face. I won't actually receive the product for at least a week due to COVID and manufacturing delays due to the popularity of the product, but if I don't take and post the picture with today's time stamp, I may well forget! So here I am without any makeup.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG8st2g3BMm4Eugy0aGposXPvaNxE60V2U4iIVr_qpnhEMhruHK_LPIcsrvOcN63E481FgDJRipf86h7R1NGo_x2ysL9RdLH9fgPn3RECYmMlbMxDoZdLauKeYMp5lCMHQXSpbSAMlUzS8/s3264/PXL_20210219_182501812.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3264" data-original-width="2448" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG8st2g3BMm4Eugy0aGposXPvaNxE60V2U4iIVr_qpnhEMhruHK_LPIcsrvOcN63E481FgDJRipf86h7R1NGo_x2ysL9RdLH9fgPn3RECYmMlbMxDoZdLauKeYMp5lCMHQXSpbSAMlUzS8/s320/PXL_20210219_182501812.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>somecookIsewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08579822534539544094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8660136811094465856.post-66013891158414552442020-07-31T05:00:00.002-04:002020-07-31T05:00:00.606-04:00Dollar store JOY<div style="text-align: center;">When my kids were young and money was super tight, Christmas was stressful. And then a friend introduced me to dollar stores. Oh, what a find!!!</div><div style="text-align: center;">I could take my kids Christmas shopping for their siblings without breaking the bank.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Fast forward to my youngest child in high school and beyond. She loves exploring the inner nooks of dollar stores more than most people. She LOVES to decorate for every holiday imaginable but she's careful with money. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Enter dollar stores. To be specific, Dollar Tree.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">It's a beautiful thing because everything is exactly $1. So if you have $5 and change, you can buy 5 items. (Don't forget some change or you can only buy 4 items and still pay tax.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">The addiction is real. I dropped in for posterboard today. A big sheet of white posterboard is only 50 cents. That's right. 50 pennies! If that's what you've got, they'll take the pennies. (Be kind to the cashier though and don't bring $5 of pennies!!! Take that to your bank.)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">And today, you even get to feel like you helped the economy even more by putting coins back into circulation!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So what kinds of things can you buy? <b><span style="font-size: x-large;">Everything! </span></b> Here's what I picked up:</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Lay's Stax. Because I have a canker sore in the back of my throat and Lay's helps clear those up. I picked up Barbecue ones for other family members because they like them! $1<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYnzx7My1ANKwM7h1XvvS65QW_2LGPgRVOhsTr23cxF2IaM8_6NajLjngp1E74U5TLWzWz25FgiVdsLxaX579-5Q203xOmNoodfCwzW8mpRQ6dKWkHQpDyQv5MuAw6_EQLjgIro2bsiHDq/s4032/IMG_20200730_135905.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYnzx7My1ANKwM7h1XvvS65QW_2LGPgRVOhsTr23cxF2IaM8_6NajLjngp1E74U5TLWzWz25FgiVdsLxaX579-5Q203xOmNoodfCwzW8mpRQ6dKWkHQpDyQv5MuAw6_EQLjgIro2bsiHDq/s320/IMG_20200730_135905.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Posterboard, but I found a package of 4 that were already cut down to the right size. I could have saved a bit by cutting it myself, but why? We'll use these in record our ideas of things to do rather than a white board right now. It will be messier, but we'll see what has been crossed off instead of erased! I already have markers!</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBAMDbyTA0nJxqSB5IdJ9bDHrMvh6NlM7Gl2-t0hRBH3jG8uyMBAFhbWJa4sVxltPOGLy4uE9-HSqoBVvBHKhkFMaEUP08hj3xeuxTtCd5Tf2CaRDX5w_PBFDKQPSOgEEPHYcTWj4CpZLJ/s4032/IMG_20200730_135915.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBAMDbyTA0nJxqSB5IdJ9bDHrMvh6NlM7Gl2-t0hRBH3jG8uyMBAFhbWJa4sVxltPOGLy4uE9-HSqoBVvBHKhkFMaEUP08hj3xeuxTtCd5Tf2CaRDX5w_PBFDKQPSOgEEPHYcTWj4CpZLJ/s320/IMG_20200730_135915.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A notebook for keeping my lists of things that I still need to get done. I had grand designs of going and walking the Rocky Ridge Reservation later today, but THAT's not going to happen now! It's far too muggy. I'm beat!<div><br /></div><div>Last night I put the finishing touches on the quilt I started 7 months ago. It's a throw quilt designed by <a href="https://quiltingismytherapy.com/help-how-do-i-quilt-it-a-brand-new-free-motion-challenge-quilting-along/" target="_blank">Angela Walters</a> for a virtual quilt along, <a href="https://quiltingismytherapy.com/free-quilt-patterns-and-tutorials/free-motion-challenge-quilting-along/how-do-i-quilt-it-free-motion-challenge-quilting-along/" target="_blank">Help! How Do I Quilt It?</a> that she did late 2019. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrw-Jz1K_lYpH0OHi-LlE6IZdFyReibjvUKDGfPs_EvOjv41U4Q2rlaWv1juWljIbbEY8wE2gVN0cnlMPMYANRBofZ44RTS8niNJSE3Ea93H9W7Sntmk-780Zra_GTYT24TsCcOshSJBjV/s4032/IMG_20200726_131803.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrw-Jz1K_lYpH0OHi-LlE6IZdFyReibjvUKDGfPs_EvOjv41U4Q2rlaWv1juWljIbbEY8wE2gVN0cnlMPMYANRBofZ44RTS8niNJSE3Ea93H9W7Sntmk-780Zra_GTYT24TsCcOshSJBjV/s320/IMG_20200726_131803.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The border is not part of Angela's panel.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"> I started this in January. Life intervened, COVID19 happened, and I went to help my parents in another state. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Coming home, I didn't even want to touch my sewing machine, let along free motion quilt!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">After several weeks, I decided I needed to finish the project. After all, I was almost finished already. That said, I didn't want to do much intensive free motion quilting so I snapped on my walking foot and broke into it with straight lines. Last Saturday, my husband, son, and I went for a drive to see some covered bridges, specifically the two longest and shortest (18 feet) in the United States within about 1 1/2 hours of our home. I hope you enjoy some of these pictures.<br />

The shortest! Once again, I've been so much better at posting on Instagram but I resolve to do better! In fact, I'm resolving to study better and write more in the coming months mostly because I think we all have a need to pay much more attention to the blessings of God during this time of the COVID19 pandemic. Personally, I think this is only a beginning of more challenges but I believe there are many, many blessings to reap during challenges. I've also known it is important to pay attention to blessings and to learn when things are good, but the hard times define us by what we decide to focus on.<br />
<br />
As a result, I am tweaking this blog a bit to help me and hopefully you find the good and great things in our lives.<br />
<br />
Another reason for my change is because I've found the strain on my wrists and thumbs has been too great for me to continue quilting. After thinking through my options, I decided to pivot to sewing and joyful creation.<br />
<br />
So I took up bagmaking to use up some of my fabric stash!<br />
<br />
Most recently I made a carry-on bag for my daughter to use when she flies home. Since it was a small project, I did very simple stitching and quilting to make the sides and bottom a bit more firm.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbbDM_dO-iZX6BN94U2xL8Ea6tOZ4r1Jaz4XDgWrOEItvecWbHh-Dw5qWgOglGaVxnkzH97MF28Yc_t4qsT4IyYuBCNElkZmAhw1BZke2_Ax5cBb3gn37SLLizB3aXZYMczryIFDqhBOLD/s1600/IMG_20200424_144711.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbbDM_dO-iZX6BN94U2xL8Ea6tOZ4r1Jaz4XDgWrOEItvecWbHh-Dw5qWgOglGaVxnkzH97MF28Yc_t4qsT4IyYuBCNElkZmAhw1BZke2_Ax5cBb3gn37SLLizB3aXZYMczryIFDqhBOLD/s320/IMG_20200424_144711.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I exploited the capabilities of my sewing machine by stitching my daughter's name, the mission where she is serving, and uplifting thoughts onto the sides of the bag. The striped fabric is a pocket, and there is a matching pocket on the inside of the bag. I didn't put a crossbody handle on, and chose to add matching handbag-style straps.<br />

I am truly grateful for my ability to create. There are so many ways to create however, and not all of them have anything to do with textiles. Tapping into that creative side is a great way to calm the anxiety and depressive demon that can bedevil all of us. My husband shoots aerial photography and organizes projects at work as well as coaches others to improve their abilities. My son writes. </div>

Wow! My Instagram followers have a better idea of what I've been doing this year! I've really slacked off writing! My journal and personal history has suffered too.<br />

On the sewing front, did I show the clothing I made? I don't think so.<br />

Recently in conversation with a friend, I became persuaded (good word, huh!) to go onto a greens diet. Realizing that I had a number of fresh vegetables probably going bad in my refrigerator, I started mixing up my brew. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Understand that I realize I'm lacking leafy greens and was happy with green vegetables in general like zucchini, celery, cucumbers which I already had. I want to start growing microgreens so I can have fresh microgreens! I learned to grow them last summer while visiting my sister and brother in law.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Every mixture has been different based on what was in my fridge. Here's what I included this morning:</div>

When I got married, I had a new set of white stoneware dishes. I think it's a complete 12-place setting suite of beautiful best ware. My mother always emphasized that it was important for children to learn to handle beautiful things carefully. <br />
<br />
I would note that she had two daughters.<br />
<br />
Her message is important though--even with sons. It just requires a few more precautions like a sturdy cabinet door protecting said dishes! <br />
<br />
I had some porcelain figurines, a few of which have survived children and 4 moves. Most of which are out for display except when we lived in apartments. Things were too tight then.<br />
<br />
Back to the dishes:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzBhXdMKT5DOKocRoMKKOfi9bvSNQibRNQcyozna195B8kkmiLtTvdtRtjZUtKvXmtxbnNsqJK0n58huA5dpcO3f_SvNlM51ihqZHjYnQzIZPbE8w7-JqgCv0ZN65SBHrb8gfk7lgIRp1l/s1600/IMG_20190311_073748.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzBhXdMKT5DOKocRoMKKOfi9bvSNQibRNQcyozna195B8kkmiLtTvdtRtjZUtKvXmtxbnNsqJK0n58huA5dpcO3f_SvNlM51ihqZHjYnQzIZPbE8w7-JqgCv0ZN65SBHrb8gfk7lgIRp1l/s320/IMG_20190311_073748.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
You'll notice two types of dishes in the dishwasher this morning. Stoneware and Corelle ware.<br />
<br />
Up to now, the Corelle ware had far more use. I have dishes from two other sets as well. Those include a few of my mother-in-law's Stengel ware and some special occasion (Thanksgiving) plates.<br />
<br />
The question is whether to keep them or downsize. <br />
<br />
Every time we use my china (even though they are technically stoneware, they're really nice and what I chose for my special china), I laugh because my sons set the table with the china, silverware, and (drumroll please) plastic water glasses. And I groan and ask them to replace it with glass. I don't think they even know we have crystal! Sorry, Mother. I really tried. The crystal used to be far more accessible but they still didn't think about it then either.<br />
<br />
Recently I moved my white "china" to the cupboard where I used to keep the Corelle ware, and constantly remind my sons that it absolutely cannot go into the microwave! It shatters. The shatter lines are actually gorgeous as one plate learned, but I don't know if it would completely break with two microwave uses. But it's being used rather than languishing in a cupboard, and I love it!<br />

Three posts in and I've only begun!<br />
<br />
Do you see yourself in my experience? Do you tend to accumulate in spite of yourself?<br />
<br />
I remember a speaker, Bob Proctor, teaching that we have to create space for what we really want. He talked about a woman who told him she wanted new drapes. She had visualized new drapes, but she still didn't have new drapes although months had passed.<br />
<br />
Bob looked around at her windows which were blocked from view by, you guessed it, drapes.<br />
<br />
He asked, "Where are you going to PUT new drapes?"<br />
<br />
The woman looked astonished and said, "Right there," waving her hand at the already draped window.<br />
<br />
Bob said, "You haven't made room for them. Take those drapes that you hate down. Right now."<br />
<br />
The woman protested because she would have no privacy without something at the windows. He shrugged at her remarks and said, "I guess you don't really want new drapes."<br />
<br />
He said she took them down that night, and the next time he visited her, she had the drapes she wanted at the window.<br />
<br />
--------------<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.pPZElyHOjE8iQdkFs2jrxgHaDT&pid=15.1&P=0&w=357&h=160" /></div>
<br />
I'm not sure how to make space for a tinier space, but I'm pretty sure I need less stuff to attain it. I have always believed that renting storage space for more stuff that is hard to get at is pretty much a waste of money, but maybe all those boxes and piles in my attic that make it hard to put new blinds up in the windows are just as stupid of a waste of space and money.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Nhgj4_wn5wBt-ZgYBKLdPe4WFzCG-6JC39BYwYsl1bWniT6DdkLnLCMi_AUohMpwJ2vCmeqFFtqAhW69iiMwUaZ3hC5bsf8vvvCS167KqBbip4H8Do_zDt5QUTOqGgarrK3O5oPuRHAa/s1600/IMG_20190311_065001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Nhgj4_wn5wBt-ZgYBKLdPe4WFzCG-6JC39BYwYsl1bWniT6DdkLnLCMi_AUohMpwJ2vCmeqFFtqAhW69iiMwUaZ3hC5bsf8vvvCS167KqBbip4H8Do_zDt5QUTOqGgarrK3O5oPuRHAa/s320/IMG_20190311_065001.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Own it. What the heck is all that stuff?! I'm pretty sure there are two boxes underneath that window that I want to keep. And the suitcases are my sons. But what is everything else?!!!!!!</div>

I started on one track in my last post and wound up somewhere else.<br />
<br />
Somewhere else important. Somewhere else that is driving my reason why.<br />
<br />
Two posts ago, I talked about our attempts to minimize our lifestyle in order to maximize our lives.<br />
<br />
Because, really, stuff weighs us down.<br />
<br />
I remember many years ago when we went to Miami, Florida, on a job assignment. We left everything inside our house for a caretaker to watch over while we put everything we could fit inside our Dodge Grand Caravan. I wish I had a picture! I put my kitchen appliances and a few toys along with clothing in with our kids. We removed one of the captains chairs and moved the bench seat from the back to the middle row and the other captain chair into the back in order to maximize the amount of space we had for our stuff. Our three kids sat on the bench seat, buckled into the three seat belts, while our dog found just enough space on the floor between their backpacks. She was a big lab but such a wonderful traveler!<br />
<br />
Jim's company paid for a 2-story, townhouse-style, furnished apartment so we didn't need furniture at least. We lived there for about 6 months and had a wonderful time. When we came home, we rented an Enterprise van to help drag all the stuff back we had accumulated. Six months=one van of stuff.<br />
<br />
When we came home, I looked at all our stuff and started cleaning out. We gave away a small mountain. I missed the lightness of just enough. When we moved, Jim's new company paid for our move so we didn't lighten up again and I was shocked at how much stuff we had when we moved into our new home in Missouri.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately I didn't take the initiative and lighten up again. We were busy homeschooling because we moved in the middle of the year. Unpacking took too long as it was!<br />
<br />
When we moved BACK to Kentucky six years later, we moved ourselves. I packed us up myself, and I got tired. I ran out of boxes and plastic. And I started giving away stuff.<br />
<br />
And more stuff.<br />
<br />
And we finally walked away with some furniture still sitting in our unsold house for our renter to use.<br />
<br />
Seven years later, we have filled the largest home we have ever owned.<br />
<br />
It's time to downsize.<br />
<br />
Time to get light again because that lightness isn't just in how large of a truck it takes to move us. It's mental and emotional garbage too. It's freeing to say, "Shaundra needs new clothes," and go to the store for an outfit. I didn't spend money frivolously; I bought what she needed--one or two new outfits because my baby was growing. I didn't have to work my way through dozens of outfits packed into boxes. I just needed one or two that were on sale. (In Florida, they sell out-of-season summer clothes in the winter just like everywhere else except those clothes are in season!) And then I got rid of the clothes she had outgrown. And those two or three playsets we brought for our kids? They were supplemented with pads of paper and markers as well as the outside world. They're artistic natures were enhanced with those few tools. Richest kids I've ever known!!!<br />
<br />

Did you know that Robert E. Lee, general of the Confederate army, may well have been a savior of the Constitution of the United States?<br />
<br />
<img alt="a small clock tower in front of a tree: The Robert E. Lee Monument stands on Monument Avenue, February 8, 2019 in Richmond, Virginia." height="360" src="https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBUtMIO.img?h=1080&w=1920&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f&x=574&y=349" width="640" /><br />
Huh?!<br />
<br />
You read that right.<br />
<br />
Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia wasn't the first defeated. In fact, it could have kept on going. Other confederate commanders had been defeated but they hadn't ended the war.<br />
<br />
Robert E. Lee was key.<br />
<br />
Let's back up though. Did Lee hate the Constitution? No. In fact, he was invited to become the commander over the Union forces. Abraham Lincoln knew he needed Lee's military genius. Lee actually was pro-Constitution. There were a lot of factors at play in his life, however, and a primary virtue he valued was honor. His family honor was ripped away from him because of his Revolutionary War hero father's post-war habits of gambling and drunkenness.<br />
<br />
Robert E. Lee could not strip away his family's honor by leaving his homeland (Virginia) in her time of crisis. But what he could do, he did. He ended the Civil War. He fought a good fight. He out-thought his opponents. He out-maneuvered his opponents. He proved his genius. And then he moved on and urged his countrymen to follow him in that maneuver in becoming good Constitutionalists again.<br />
<br />
It broke his heart to leave the Union, and it broke his heart to see so many good men that he loved killed.<br />
<br />
He stood up and was counted. He pled with Southerners everywhere to lay down their weapons of war because he knew they could and would continue guerrilla warfare ad infinitum. Like Jesse James did. He knew it was time for the country to heal. Ironically, the Virginian, Robert E. Lee, stood with Abraham Lincoln in reuniting the country. It ruined him financially and respectfully, but he did it anyway. He stood on principle.<br />
<br />
Where did I learn this? From books. Books help us remember principles.<br />
<br />
It's time to stand for principles again. Remember what Robert E. Lee asked of his countrymen. Heal our country. Stop the divisiveness. Get rid of everything that doesn't matter, schedules that are overfull, driving habits that kill, online bullying that causes tremendous sadness.<br />
<br />
It is time to heal each other. People, not processes, are what matters.</div>

We define ourselves every minute!<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Recently I had a soul defining moment that I've been dodging for YEARS.<br />
<br />
It's called RETIREMENT, and it's LOOMING over us like someone else's nightmare.<br />
<br />
And it has another name: DEBT. I finally had enough about a year ago. Jim quit his job and went to the more risky venture of contracting his services. In the process, he finally started getting paid closer to what he is worth.<br />
<br />
And nothing changed. Okay, his diet plan got easier to pay for. But that was it.<br />
<br />
How did that happen? I know because I've always kept track of our money, but I didn't control it. We simply responded to need and concerns. We've tried very hard to teach our kids to avoid some common mistakes, mistakes that are labeled as DEBT. Both of our sons have bought their cars with cash.<br />
<br />
And then one son wrecked his car. Yucky lesson. It doesn't look too bad, does it? But you can't see the underside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Kwc9mPFpDIWQRbHZQvsS3QA6hddMD-09XgWWzlViQS0d6lS0dozFk44Ae0iMnsGD7FA8PNUtc1iS-6GI9sIxnQ1P1cTTD8MmyZRbQEsshNWxq2flY0FgTez6DJ7HcQJyITg06kD31zhq/s1600/IMG_20190219_161229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Kwc9mPFpDIWQRbHZQvsS3QA6hddMD-09XgWWzlViQS0d6lS0dozFk44Ae0iMnsGD7FA8PNUtc1iS-6GI9sIxnQ1P1cTTD8MmyZRbQEsshNWxq2flY0FgTez6DJ7HcQJyITg06kD31zhq/s320/IMG_20190219_161229.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can see the flat tire but you may not realize the wheel itself broke. Three of those wheels broke. And all because someone else's schedule was more important to her than my son's safety. He narrowly missed hitting a black SUV whose driver thought her left turn into the grocery/gas store was more important than my son's right of way on the state highway. He missed her. She didn't even have the grace to stop, but the person behind her did. That lady made sure he was okay. That curb he jumped? It's okay too. They stopped tallying the damages at $4,500. He only paid $3,500 for the car. The sign it broke is gone. He's saving money again for a car instead of school but he still needs money for school next year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Remember last post where I talked about remembering the ugly about where our country has been? Remember the Civil War? Remember blacks being shoved to awful schools and the backs of buses? This isn't a racial problem. This is a courtesy problem. This is forgetting we are all children of a loving Father in Heaven. This is about being more concerned about others than our schedule or convenience. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As my husband puts it, "People over processes."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is where our education needs to redirect. We've spent time and money on anti-bullying messages and we have bullying in our social media. Let's spend time and money studying history again. Stop tearing down the Confederate statues, not because they're good but because we NEVER WANT TO GO THERE AGAIN.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
History unlearned is history repeated. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rudeness, all about me attitudes, result in unnecessary automobile accidents, road rage, hurt feelings, offenses taken where none were intended. Go find a book. Not fantasy but history. Learn about what happens when people care more about themselves than others. Then check into yourself. Are you more like those who wanted your conveniences over the life of another human being? Slavery wasn't just about black people. Indentured servants were treated worse. Factory workers? What do you know about the plight of those children on the Orphan Trains? Have you heard about them? Liken what you're reading to yourself. Are you more like the best in them or the worst? What face do you wear online? Behind the wheel?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
THAT, my friends, is what defines us as a nation.</div>
<br /></div>
somecookIsewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08579822534539544094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8660136811094465856.post-49527204440742608122019-03-11T05:57:00.002-04:002019-03-11T05:59:28.550-04:00Prayer that my minimizing might help others<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Have you ever reached that point that you realized that you were working like crazy and getting behinder by the minute? Have you reached that point of having four or five quilt tops that are ready to be sandwiched and quilted but no funds to pay someone else to quilt them? Or realized that you don't have anyone that really needs them?<br />
<br />
Or have you heard the word MINIMALIST so many times that it's starting to wear on you about how much you AREN'T living that reality?<br />
<br />
Or maybe TAX time slaps you in the face and you realize that later is now?<br />
<br />
That happened here.<br />
<br />
So my frenzied reaction to having a federal tax bill is this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEika7cG5r3H1s2_6xcijeaeTZ112arm442gMr76eE6Mo7qnn_F_5cHmwxR7WPo_4X-ol9hkxpnyhJ2XRM7NwiLcbR_jjJzP4l_wKxJIfj_-Uz_4UtK8sKEzW2LVf87bowSleEmiGaKbuNX6/s1600/IMG_20190309_154558_763.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEika7cG5r3H1s2_6xcijeaeTZ112arm442gMr76eE6Mo7qnn_F_5cHmwxR7WPo_4X-ol9hkxpnyhJ2XRM7NwiLcbR_jjJzP4l_wKxJIfj_-Uz_4UtK8sKEzW2LVf87bowSleEmiGaKbuNX6/s320/IMG_20190309_154558_763.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And you are saying, "HUH?"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But some of you may recognize this as a small, comfort sized quilt. This one is actually going to somebody my friend knows, but I have a duplicate headed to the Ronald McDonald House. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
How is that going to help?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Simple. It's a tax write off using fabric I already own, already bought. You know, the stuff you have had so long that it feels like it was free? (Thank you, IRS, that's only a figure of speech, but I didn't buy it recently. It has been sitting on my shelf for at least a year with no landing place in mind.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I figured out our taxes this year, I became more and more tense because our usual write offs were disappearing. And my brief foray into the land of reporting to someone else's workplace for a paycheck resulted in an additional $200 tax (on less than a month's and not a whole lot of money worth of effort.) With that paycheck, my husband flew out to see his parents and our daughter--both necessary adventures so I have no regrets. At least until I prepared our taxes with Turbo Tax's help. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But the pain began much earlier than inputting my W-2. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You see, my daughter moved to college last fall. And became self supporting. So we lost half of her support deduction.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
She's our youngest so this pain started several years ago when my boys turned 17. They're 22 now. At 17, the automatic child exemption stops, but you can still keep them as dependents for tax purposes as long as you are still supporting them and they don't make more than a bare minimum. So we haven't been able to claim them since they were about 18. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our daughter just turned 19 and our fun was over.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Maybe you can relate? Or dread?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I only made two charitable, in kind donations last year, and I savored both of them. Between our tithing, other cash donations, and those TWO in-kind donations of household goods and clothing, we didn't have to come up with THOUSANDS in federal tax. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This year I hit the ground running on this whole minimalist idea. Our bookcases are emptying because books make a really good donation. So far I've donated 4 boxes of books with 3 more boxes sitting on the floor behind me. I haven't even gotten to the point that I can put all of our books into the bookcases we'll take with us when we downsize our home, let alone move into a tiny house!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
THAT is painful! Books are my life, my freedom, and my education. They're my defense against our society's soul destroying effort to rewrite our country's history, the good, the bad, the ugly. Because it ALL made us who we are today. Maybe especially the ugly. Without remembering the ugly, we might become even uglier. With those memories, we can become more kind. Without them, we might cycle back around to become more cynical, more proud, and more prejudiced.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All this makes slimming down my book collection painful.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So is slimming down my fabric collection. Both, however, can be put back into circulation to enrich another generation. Children who have medical troubles and children and adults who need to learn time-honored values may hopefully benefit from my efforts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Now I've finished my first, fairly easy garment. What next?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My experience using the <i>See and Sew</i> pattern was so positive that I went back to that rack at JoAnn Fabrics and found a<i> New Look</i> skirt pattern for my daughter who is leaving on a church mission in two weeks. Not quite as simple because it has a separate waistband and zipper. Having sewn a number of zipper projects in the past year, I shrugged off the challenge with a fairly laissez faire attitude.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbPyqc0XekKHSj8OHPh3MnbyNqp76P2aveksYeN2_5_ox1xkLy6GUiIns0GsBQoIDNFzdSBuRbneeg_XRl7G2aLi_5z9pqaLKA3MhneAQyjskYXJdvs5IJdC1axMAfZ3ezb1gnY8D2yvZe/s1600/IMG_20190103_101009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbPyqc0XekKHSj8OHPh3MnbyNqp76P2aveksYeN2_5_ox1xkLy6GUiIns0GsBQoIDNFzdSBuRbneeg_XRl7G2aLi_5z9pqaLKA3MhneAQyjskYXJdvs5IJdC1axMAfZ3ezb1gnY8D2yvZe/s320/IMG_20190103_101009.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oops.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Umm, zippers. And sizes. And directions.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The zipper directions. Not clear and the pictures didn't help. That on top of me misunderstanding the directions for facing the waistband cost me <i><b>HOURS</b></i>! Since it has been a few years since I last added a waistband, I muffed it. (A different picture accompanying the directions for the waistband and zipper would have greatly helped my understanding too.) I finally unpicked the whole thing from the skirt and will cut out another waistband and start over. Now I see why it said to <i><b>study </b></i>the directions before beginning. If unclear, read it again. Work with scrap fabric, but definitely don't use $17 a yard fabric (thankfully I got it on 50% discount.) At least I had extra since I laid out the pattern as economically as I could while keeping it on straight of grain.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As for the zippers, I finally went to YouTube. The first video confused me but the second one was excellently done by Craftsy. I've put the link on my sidebar under Sewing Tutorials and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XTCQsSLBFw&t=5s" target="_blank">here</a>. I will be playing it as I complete each step. In fairness, this is a difficult process to describe using just words without a video so I'll cut the writers slack. <br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Size measurements. I used a bigger size than expected because of the listed waist size. It almost fell off my daughter when I tried it on her. I might make a sewing moulage of her so I can sew her clothing while she is serving her mission. So I knocked it down about 4 sizes, smaller than I had initially expected to cut. I should note that the <i>See and Sew</i> sizing wasn't terrific either. I guessed at the size a little but it was a logical guess since I don't totally match their sizes.<br />
<br />
I just looked up the makers of each of the patterns I have used this year. Simplicity makes New Look, and Butterick makes New Look and McCall's owns both as well as all the others as of November 2017. My mother used to say that Vogue and Butterick made the best patterns and directions, and she basically threw away the Simplicity directions and muddled through on her own knowledge of sewing to make those designs. Likewise, I've always struggled more with Simplicity patterns. I wonder what will happen now that all the pattern companies are under one head.<br />
<br />
Hopefully I'll be able to make a new waistband and add a zipper more successfully now.</div>
</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I have around 4 quilt tops ready to be quilted and free motion quilting abilities that are faltering due to aching thumbs and wrists (probably arthritis) SO I am shifting focus. I have long been intimidated by garment sewing so that's what I'm conquering next!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My first project? A <i>See and Sew</i> pair of pajama pants. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Very basic, very easy. Elasticized waist without pockets. Next time, I'll add pockets. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm going to show some techniques that run contrary to what many bloggers and YouTubers demonstrate so let me share my credentials (or rather, the credentials of those who taught me.) My mother, who taught me, paid for a long series of sewing lessons from a professionally trained, high-end clothier. She passed many of those dressmaker tips on to me while she taught me to sew. Her hopes of giving me a practical and creative outlet failed for decades because I was too fixated on perfection. (Thank you Jenny Doan and other quilters for helping shift that paradigm!) However, I never forgot those tips because I used them to discern high quality clothing vs. stuff that would make it through the summer on my kids but no further. And now finally I'm trying my hand at sewing again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First, the cutting. A cutting blade or scissors? I initially thought a blade would be easier.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO_cL-PypNtTHqQ15MO3vHckJN9t0LCYxW7tIZ1ieTnFQ9Jk7_jDnBIeIMy5LqZSYXoEujgO7YsFhyM0XrRQZ-oISkHXOtvKUaGYYz27YmQ_z7cwB8361ZJgl0coHvoCaJZBPJXXPYGMou/s1600/IMG_20181230_170905.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO_cL-PypNtTHqQ15MO3vHckJN9t0LCYxW7tIZ1ieTnFQ9Jk7_jDnBIeIMy5LqZSYXoEujgO7YsFhyM0XrRQZ-oISkHXOtvKUaGYYz27YmQ_z7cwB8361ZJgl0coHvoCaJZBPJXXPYGMou/s320/IMG_20181230_170905.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That lasted for a short time. It has advantages, but this was thick flannel and my blade was apparently not new. (I think it was Easy Spirit.) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJQnSeDqdO9Rr57IA43-gfrpfZZQRvC0mT8k6tL3eRIZt80zYrzTtqJvPS056vGgfyqsduYrUCUflF7mrnwQ9Is1JrMYWTuPf3ug7L81Yj402HsQnG5JhBEhsIwUxdFAEo1QrMzHaYWgal/s1600/IMG_20181230_171102.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJQnSeDqdO9Rr57IA43-gfrpfZZQRvC0mT8k6tL3eRIZt80zYrzTtqJvPS056vGgfyqsduYrUCUflF7mrnwQ9Is1JrMYWTuPf3ug7L81Yj402HsQnG5JhBEhsIwUxdFAEo1QrMzHaYWgal/s320/IMG_20181230_171102.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So after cutting and recutting multiple times, I tossed that away and went back to my Gingher shears. Tip: To eliminate the problem of the bottom layer being slighter wider than the top layer, hold the paper down with your other hand while cutting. I'm right handed so I held down the left side where the bulk of the pattern was. I pity left handers trying to sew and highly recommend another needle art. The odds are stacked against you! I think that's why Jenny Doan is ambidextrous. She sewed enough that she had to adapt to a right-hander's world.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg32NhKcY6qKfPk2_lOeT2C9PH1KrQON-mvCL0YcU_vb0BZtmg9s46bF_a922FfstJ6a5EmLkBZvcwqT8l3U66d04s-gfJdyLWfF9jSEBjEZUPqp07Xrew7-zP68JKHps9_lrcB8ErzHH6f/s1600/IMG_20181230_173420.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg32NhKcY6qKfPk2_lOeT2C9PH1KrQON-mvCL0YcU_vb0BZtmg9s46bF_a922FfstJ6a5EmLkBZvcwqT8l3U66d04s-gfJdyLWfF9jSEBjEZUPqp07Xrew7-zP68JKHps9_lrcB8ErzHH6f/s320/IMG_20181230_173420.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My main beef is next. I know a lot of YouTubers and bloggers pin patterns and fabrics running parallel to cut lines, but I was taught to pin the pattern onto the fabric by poking the pins in a perpendicular fashion to the cut line. That keeps the pattern from sliding. The same thing goes for the straight-of-grain lines.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHlrzb61mi3Pw50x8aBuC5xIbsIlhHcPzzcFTd-xKieVxaD_UPrLi35-ArX5lRKfe9Ts0Ap7BVs_Ot5X_nCmLJOsNNSrgVtV0LwMCsHJ4Nk1IEZ2UwIPzYAK35ixIlYwQlKIXRoVmsbSYl/s1600/IMG_20181230_170728.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHlrzb61mi3Pw50x8aBuC5xIbsIlhHcPzzcFTd-xKieVxaD_UPrLi35-ArX5lRKfe9Ts0Ap7BVs_Ot5X_nCmLJOsNNSrgVtV0LwMCsHJ4Nk1IEZ2UwIPzYAK35ixIlYwQlKIXRoVmsbSYl/s320/IMG_20181230_170728.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When turning under fabric 1/4" for a hem or something, I sew along the line and then press the edge over. It's a lot smoother, gives a sharper fold, and helps me NOT stretch the fabric as I'm fighting to stitch it down. It also gives extra protection against fraying fabric through multiple laundry sessions. (Not nearly as big of a concern for quilters!) </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8ekSrrHrFx61JgQFGrY7bCHEIXVCUnWga3tYqobHtQsy_L9e8R1DyuIOhJexHyNLmYsHR5fbyLuPa_KklHZj-iURrjSFlkuwwjAkR0sY07fkM3upgr_FRf4-_gnQ3NqUo6r_hP1ALfpVc/s1600/IMG_20181230_200556.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8ekSrrHrFx61JgQFGrY7bCHEIXVCUnWga3tYqobHtQsy_L9e8R1DyuIOhJexHyNLmYsHR5fbyLuPa_KklHZj-iURrjSFlkuwwjAkR0sY07fkM3upgr_FRf4-_gnQ3NqUo6r_hP1ALfpVc/s320/IMG_20181230_200556.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also pink the seams to retard fraying. Always. I use Fiskars pinking shears because Ginghers are terribly expensive, and they aren't the spring loaded ones. I wish they were. Then I press the seams open. The seams are 5/8" so burned fingers aren't an issue like they are when I occasionally pressed seams open on quilt blocks.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9A_O4EIyeTlzmOds2X4crE3cWwEv1woRO-n7gvShVFokFXMQfUwmxTZ-_sa8OaNIPe745wWneGhwC6TBiXp9HG2LIWR91XlqJMfjpMrWL1mLH_rrUiwRmmUcDlbEYwu0TxDh63JyT4aQR/s1600/00000PORTRAIT_00000_BURST20181230185503967.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9A_O4EIyeTlzmOds2X4crE3cWwEv1woRO-n7gvShVFokFXMQfUwmxTZ-_sa8OaNIPe745wWneGhwC6TBiXp9HG2LIWR91XlqJMfjpMrWL1mLH_rrUiwRmmUcDlbEYwu0TxDh63JyT4aQR/s320/00000PORTRAIT_00000_BURST20181230185503967.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next, I slash the notches. I know, I know, there are times and fabrics when you would use other techniques, but PJs are not one of those times!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2lnVQ0SAXSGxDd3cZXBrTpNxUhEv2oyEn3rgqUc9WHZTCx4DridxWEM2jhoDbqN4jVWTsndehvQFPD5hNZWQr_ykNNA0BGh9ctr1lJWS3b1JIko-a-9NHxk5u_ghzsXDSp8thhDNoWtj_/s1600/IMG_20181230_172031.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2lnVQ0SAXSGxDd3cZXBrTpNxUhEv2oyEn3rgqUc9WHZTCx4DridxWEM2jhoDbqN4jVWTsndehvQFPD5hNZWQr_ykNNA0BGh9ctr1lJWS3b1JIko-a-9NHxk5u_ghzsXDSp8thhDNoWtj_/s320/IMG_20181230_172031.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWMdJ_krLOL0Km4pVEV7o5IFsCNr01ekTivW-i_0Fe6PB-1T95CfTsCJd2_0dFKW4zhAzeIMeyRy742VAnD4yBWpO5F-f__pmV3Abe2WwUCWbZ_-FInLzs8mdbuQrpM9YkVdFKd_1_bFQy/s1600/IMG_20181230_172025.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWMdJ_krLOL0Km4pVEV7o5IFsCNr01ekTivW-i_0Fe6PB-1T95CfTsCJd2_0dFKW4zhAzeIMeyRy742VAnD4yBWpO5F-f__pmV3Abe2WwUCWbZ_-FInLzs8mdbuQrpM9YkVdFKd_1_bFQy/s320/IMG_20181230_172025.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Again, I pin the fabrics together to join them with the pins running perpendicular to the cut line. I'm right handed, my sewing machine is right handed, and I keep my pincushion to the right side of my sewing so the fabric doesn't sweep it off the table. It goes for a far smoother and efficient motion to easily remove the pins without stopping your machine, AND if you occasionally sew over pins, it isn't as deadly to your machine. Your chance of the needle sliding over one pin is reasonably good, but if it has the entire pin in front of the needle, you have a better chance of breaking your needle and/or jamming your machine. Don't even start me on pointing the head of the pin toward the needle. I watched a YouTube video yesterday where the sewist did exactly that, and it looked <i>painfully </i>awkward!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGHtlz7fAn3zq8DfTfCKrpgLNbWcE2WarrwLsOCnCKAczRU53LoFHQQ0BqMzqMy3xd61iwxxn9maC4n5ojaBskQ_Np25npy5ztW0SL5TyoF14g0989lDxCuomu9I72c7pCZm4mqyQLtg23/s1600/IMG_20181230_184639.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGHtlz7fAn3zq8DfTfCKrpgLNbWcE2WarrwLsOCnCKAczRU53LoFHQQ0BqMzqMy3xd61iwxxn9maC4n5ojaBskQ_Np25npy5ztW0SL5TyoF14g0989lDxCuomu9I72c7pCZm4mqyQLtg23/s320/IMG_20181230_184639.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I admit that, as a beginning sewist, I often stop when removing pins because frankly I'm readjusting something at the same time, but I don't have to and often don't. My mother almost never stops her machine but flies through every seam. I hope to get that fast!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

So here are some of the most common dressmaker techniques as taught by some of the best dressmaker schools. I hope they help someone else too.</div>
